About the Pine Mountain Club-Mt. Pinos Web Cam
This Web Cam is located in the home of Scott and Barbara Rosen, owners of Frazier Mountain Internet Service. The Web Cam overlooks Woodland Drive in Pine Mountain Club, facing South towards Mt. Pinos.

The picture is taken using a Video Camera hooked up to a Snappy. The Snappy is manufactured by Play, Inc. and plugs into the parallel port of the PC. We previously used Connectix's Color QuickCam, but it didn't handle looking into the Sun very well. The Snappy is connected to an old 486-66 PC with 8MB of RAM and a 100MB hard disk (thank you to Eric Mack of ICA for his generous donation of the motherboard upgrade!). It is running Windows 95 and uses Snappy 2.0 software in conjuction with Kent's Automatic Snappy Snapper. Currently, we run an FTP daemon on this computer and have our web server ftp the image from this computer via a cron job (we have a permanent connection to our office via our wireless network). When I have a few free moments, I'll change it so that the Kent's Automatic Snappy Snapper will kick off an ftp client to send the image to the web server.

Our web cam first went into service in September 1996. Since that time, we've tried many different things to improve it. We have many more upgrades planned in the near future, so please visit us again...

It is our hope that there will be several other people who put up local Web Cams in key places around the Hill, as these types of cameras can make it very easy to tell what current weather conditions are like. This could be of great benefit to residents of our mountain communities as well as to our visitors. Besides, its a neat feeling to know that your view can seen by people throughout the Hill, as well as by people throughout the entire World!

If you have a local web cam, or are interested in setting one up, please contact us at webmaster@frazmtn.com
