Authors Day at the Museum.
On September 6th, the Ridge Route Communities Museum is having an Author's Day with four authors talking to people and autographing their books. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum at 3515 Park Drive. Harrison Scott will be here 10 a.m. to 12 noon. He is the author of "The Ridge Route-The Road That United California" and his newest book "Lost Hotels". Mr. Scott is responsible for obtaining a listing for the Ridge Route on the National List of Historical Places and has studied the subject for many years. If you are interested in this subject, come and talk to Mr. Scott. His books will be for sale. If you have a copy you would like autgraphed, bring it with you. Bonnie Ketterl Kane is a local historian and is now writing a series of histories of this mountain area under the series title "A View from the Ridge Route" She has published three volumes, "First Peoples", "The Ft. Tejon Period", and "The Ranchos". Her newest volume will be published in September. It covers the history of the mines, and oil and water systems in the area. Again, if you have copies of her books you want autographed, bring them with you. She will be on site most of the day. Two local authors of children's books will be at the museum to autograph and discuss their books. Maggie Caldwell Smith of Pine Mountain Club has written two books under the series title of "Tommy Wilson, Junior Veterinarian". These books are written for young people aged 8-12 and tell of Tommy's many adventures as a junior veternarian solving many mysteries involving sick and injured wild life. Randie Sue Elliott of Lebec is the other author of children's books who will be present. Her first book titled "Spidey's Human" is a facinating story about little creatures. These books are aimed for older children. Bring your youngsters and find out more. September 6th is also the deadline for bidding on our silent auction item, Noritake china. This china is service for 12 with all of the serving pieces. The pattern is called Rosegarden and has a pattern of pink roses - very pretty. The highest bidder on this silent auction will win this set. The funds benefit the museum. The bidding closes at 1 p.m. In addition, all of the outdoor displays on the property will be open for viewing and we will have two llamas in our corral for everyone's enjoyment. Old Ridge Route Tours
The Ridge Route is currently under repair, to get the latest go here

This year we are commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of the Transcontinental Stagecoach, the "Butterfield Overland Stage", in our mountains. Stage lines had been running between Northern and Southern California but on October 8th, 1858 the first stage arrived at our local stop at Fort Tejon connecting us with the rest of the United States. Through this monumental event newspapers, mail and military dispatches arrived in a more timely manner.more information on this here.

Also this year, we are commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the opening of Highway 99. The first highway through these mountains was the "Ridge Route" as it ran along the ridge tops. The new Highway 99 or "Ridge Route Alternate", was located in the canyons to the west of that first road. It was a dangerous three lane road that was later changed to four lanes and named the "Golden State Highway". More here
